At the end of September 2018, I became Vice-Chair of Governors, handing of the role of Chair to Mr Clive Robertson. When the Ark Federation was formed in October 2013 I was privileged and proud to be elected Chair of Governors. Prior to that I had been a Governor at Beer C of E Aided Primary School for four years and Chair for most of that time. I am a Foundation Governor nominated by St Michael’s Beer, but represent the Diocese.
I am now fully retired having had a wonderful career in education, I was a headteacher of two primary Church Aided schools and then undertook freelance work which included, Church School Inspections and managing the tutors working with teachers aspiring to become headteachers through studying for the National Primary Headteacher’s Qualification.
Retirement is busy. I enjoy being active in the community. I am secretary to St Michael’s Beer PCC and a Rotarian. I enjoy my garden, playing golf and am a keen quilter.
I am and have always been passionate about primary school education with all children reaching full potential in effective schools.

Term of office:
As a local vicar, being on the Governing body of a Church School comes with the job, and it’s a role I’ve come to enjoy over the years. I have served as a Governor for the Ark Federation, and previously Beer School, since 2007, and have six years experience as a Governor prior to that. Being a Governor is only part of my role with the Federation and, together with others from local churches, I seek to support the schools pastorally and through involvement in collective worship.
I have two children of my own who are now both at Secondary School and, to their relief, no longer have to sit through dad’s assemblies. Prior to becoming a vicar I worked in scientific research and also did a stint with BBC local radio.
I was pleased to join the governing body in early 2017 as a foundation governor.
I moved to Beer in 2013 with my wife and our 2 children, both of whom are at Beer Primary.
I’m a management accountant by trade, and my background is primarily property and local government.
Roles: Member of Resources committee
Term of office: 16.11.16 – 20
Roles: Nominated governor for Safeguarding, Member of Resources and Teaching and Learning committees
Term of office: 14.11.16 – 20
Role: Member of Teaching and Learning Committee.
Category: Staff Governor.
Term of Office: 21.06.17 – 21
I have been teaching for 24 years and, although the job has changed in many ways during that time, I still enjoy the challenge and excitement of being in the classroom.
I have been at Beer for three years now having previously taught in schools in Exeter and Exmouth. During that time, I have taken on many different roles and I am currently developing my career as Head of School, Teacher Governor and Class 4 teacher.
I have three grown-up sons who are now either at university or in the world of work and, seeing their progress into adulthood makes me more determined to play my part in equipping children to face the challenges of living and learning in the modern world.
